About the Christian Year

Gospel Procession Advent 1 1999
Gospel Procession
The Christian year is comprised of a number of seasons, principally Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent and Easter. Other Sundays are referred to as Ordinary Sundays. During the year we follow the life of Christ as it is portrayed in the Liturgy. The Christian Year begins on the first Sunday in Advent which usually occurs in late November or early December. Christians all over the world follow Christ by contemplating and meditating on His birth, earthly life, death, resurrection and ascension. Christians also remember the Saints and Martyrs with special "Saints Days" that are dotted throughout the year. Every day in the Calendar is marked with a different colour. Green is for growth and is used for "ordinary" Sundays, Violet is for the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent signifying the need for self examination and preparation. Red is for the "Blood of the Martyrs" and white is for special Holy Days and the most important seasons of Christmas and Easter. If you scroll down the Calendar quickly you will see just how colourful the Christian Year can be. In some ways this accurately reflects the joys and sorrows, not only of Christ's life, but also of the people of our parish as we seek to follow him. The fact that this is a Liturgical and Social calendar reminds us that God is with us in all that we do in our daily life, not just on Sundays and in Church.
