FRANK WOODS

by Fr. Brian Porter
Archbishop of Melbourne 1957 - 1977
Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia 1971 - 1977

Frank Woods
Frank Woods
by Fr. Brian Porter
The centenary of the birth of Melbourne’s last English Archbishop was celebrated in April at Trinity College University of Melbourne. For this notable occasion Dr Brian Porter wrote a biographical study which was launched by the other Archbishop Frank (Little) who was Roman Catholic Archbishop 1974 – 96. Their affectionate relationship witnessed to Frank Woods’ passion for ecumenism: “I am an ecumaniac!” he claimed. Frank Woods came from a notable English episcopal family and was nominated in 1957 to come here from Manchester when Melbourne Anglicans looked automatically to the mother Church of England for its leadership. Arriving here in 1957, Archbishop and Mrs Woods and their four children eventually became keen Australians. Archbishop Woods did much to educate the clergy and laity of the Diocese, to organise the Diocese into regions of Episcopal care with assistant bishops and to offer distinguished leadership in church and state, and was eventually honoured by being made a KBE by the Queen. As Primate he visited each of the Australian Dioceses and helped build a sense of an Australian Anglican Church. Trinity College has published Dr Porter’s book to help raise funds for the Frank Woods Endowment devoted to the training of women and men for the ordained ministry of the Church. The book has been well-reviewed and offers valuable insights into the history of the Diocese during a period of considerable growth. Dr Woods consecrated the new St John’s Camberwell just on 50 years ago. Copies can be ordered from the Development Office, Trinity College, Parkville VIC 3052 for $35 including postage.

The Potter God . . .

by Bp. Graeme Rutherford

The Potter God
by Bishop Graeme Rutherford
Written as the Lenten Study Guide for the Anglican Church in Australia, this book is a study guide based on Bernard of Clairvaux, an influential twelfth century Cistercian abbot.

"We are formed in the image of God, de-formed by sin, re-formed by grace, in-formed by scripture, con-formed to Christ and transformed in Glory."

The Image that lies behind all these themes and binds them together is that of the 'potter God' whose finger prints can be recognised in the transformation of human lumps of clay.

Graeme Rutherford is the assistant bishop of Newcastle and bishop of the (New South Wales) central coast. Through his friendship with the community of Cistercian Monks at Tarrawarra Abbey Yarra Glenn, Victoria, he has developed an interest in the great monastic writers of the church.

Graeme, a former Vicar of the parish for fifteen years, is married to Caroline and they have five children. He is passionate about Charolais cattle and Rhode Island Red Roosters.

At the Start of the Day . . .

At the Start of the Day
by Dr Muriel Porter OAM
The daily round of corporate morning and evening prayer is at the heart of traditional spirituality. Too many people, however - both clergy and lay people - find this daily ritual virtually impossible. They find themselves, more often than not, saying the daily offices alone, and therefore find the 'bidding and response' pattern of the service uncomfortable and artificial.

At the Start of the Day provides a psalm (or portion of a psalm) for each day of the week (Monday to Saturday), and a small portion from the bible for each of these days.

This booklet is offered in the hope that it might meet the needs of those who long to pray daily, but have found the problems surrounding structured prayer usually insurmountable. It is not designed to be the whole diet of prayer and scripture, however. It is not a substitute for corporate prayer and extended reading of God's word under the discipline of the lectionary. It is important to make time and opportunity for these. At the Start if the Day merely provides resources for the days when there is no alternative.
May it restore to busy people the opportunity to participate regularly in the round of morning prayer, and so feel once more they share in their spiritual heritage.

History of St John's, Camberwell . . .

by R. J. MACDOUGALL
History of St John's Camberwell
History of St John's Camberwell
by R. J. MACDOUGALL
This history covers the period from 1856 to 1963 and is a painstakingly researched work of literary skill.
It covers the earliest time of the parish and chronicles the incumbencies of the Vicars including Cresswell, Perry, Wilson, Fenwick-Brown, Thomas and Clark.
It was published in 1963 during the centary of the church and, in the introduction written by the Vicar at the time, Rev Russell Clark, he pointed out that this book would serve to make the parishioners "mindful of our heritage" we possess in the parish.
Whilst the book was sold at the time for it's cost price, it now costs $25 and limited hard-bound copies are still available.
